Onguma Oshivelo Farming
Sustainability and caring for your community is top priority for the team of Onguma.
Through the vision and wisdom of the Founder and Chairman of the Onguma Group, strategic plans were made to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the Onguma Nature Reserve. The main aim was to provide jobs and income and offer the local community the opportunity to have meaningful and productive lives.
Oshivelo Farming is a 500-hectare vegetable farm located on the borders of Etosha, Oshivelo township and Onguma. Currently, 94 hectares are under irrigation and Oshivelo Farming aims at developing another 150 hectares in the foreseeable future. Water is sourced from strong boreholes on the property.
Oshivelo Farming produces a variety of vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, beetroot to name a few and papayas. Four hundred tons of vegetable is currently sold monthly into the Namibian market.
Oshivelo Farming currently employs 180 local people on a permanent basis of which 80% are women. Up to 100 additional people are employed seasonally. All of these individuals were previously unemployed.
To find out more about this initiative please visit the web page and watch this short video. Onguma is very proud to be part of this amazing project and knowing that both young and old are being positively affected.
The Ant Collection remains good value for money
Ant´s Nest and Ant’s Hill have issued their 2020 rates and on close inspection, you will realize that the exchange rate remains in the consumer’s interest. Ant’s remain a very good value for money safari as they offer a fully inclusive rate and a very personalised and tailormade holiday. Reachability has also become effortless as guests can opt to fly into the reserve with a private charter alternatively the easy 3-hour drive from the airport to the lodge remains the most popular way to get to Ant’s.
Why not combine another area with Ant’s and extend your safari experience? Welgevonden offers a variety of safari lodges and this is a mere hour away from Ant’s Nest & Ant’s Hill, alternatively take a leisurely 3-hour drive towards Botswana and you reach Mashatu. These areas are great safari combinations with Ant’s as both offer wildlife that the other does not necessarily have.
Garonga’s schools initiative
Garonga safari camp recently hosted 8 kids from a local school to give them the opportunity to see and experience a safari lodge and what it entails to run it. The kids were accompanied by their teacher and spent the whole day listening to staff sharing their experience, and ending the day with a wonderful game drive. These are just one of many initiatives that Garonga is involved in. Please read the full blog here.

Robin Pope Safaris makes planning easier and the Emerald season is coming
Robin Pope Safaris offers their River Journeys package only for a limited time of the year. This safari covers one of Zambia’s premier parks – South Luangwa. The Luangwa Valley is one of the last unspoiled wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa.
“The Luangwa Valley is at its most dramatic in the Emerald Season, with the Luangwa River now flowing over into the brimming lagoons. Boating into these lagoons, flooded ebony groves and flowing channels give you a view of the Valley which is normally inaccessible during this season“.
To be in the heart of the park, at peak flood time, staying at the first camp built in Zambia (Nsefu) with the river being your only access, is quite an experience.
Next availalable dates are 22 January to 31 March 2020.
Robin Pope also now has most of their camps on a full listing on WETU which will make planning their itineraries a lot easier for you. Please make contact with them if you are not familiar with using this tool.
