Hailing from a family who migrated to Namibia during the 1950’s from the northern Cape and who settled in the north of Namibia close to the Kavango region in an area known as the Mangetti, Cobus Bruwer grew up with a natural passion for the wilderness and the Okavango. His childhood dreams became the foundation of his vision to pursue and support sustainable tourism. When the opportunity presented itself for him to take care of a piece of the ecologically sensitive Okavango River and surrounding wetlands, which were under threat of uncontrolled agricultural development and excessive cultivation, he moved to establish a small but pioneering environmental protected area on the banks of the Okavango River. This was done in close co-operation with the local community, who has been living on the banks of the Okavango for more than 300 years. The establishment of a classic safari camp would support the initiative and serve as an example for sustainable use of community land.
The land, previously laid barren by agricultural use, has been rehabilitated and now covered with lush native vegetation. Taranga Safari is built in a manner that has been designed to have a low impact on the environment. Tented chalets built on wooden deck structures provide an environmentally friendly accommodation. Attention has been applied to the implementation of infra-structure in a manner to ensure it could be removed without permanent damage to the land. Incredible bird life is on full display and the return of various small animal species like the African River Beaver, Iguana, and the Genet are evident. During the season, the frog choir at night and the early morning birdsong makes for a memorable wilderness experience. Effort is being pursued to promote sustainable fishing amongst the local communities and support is provided to authorities by way of making equipment available for protecting hippo and crocodile populations.
In addition to this, Taranga Safari makes a sustainable positive contribution towards the rural economy providing permanent and seasonal employment opportunities. Sourcing local produce like vegetables from local households as much as possible also serves to support the local small farming community. On a somewhat larger scale the commercial activity emanating from these initiatives increase the circulation of monetary funds amongst local small businesses, which continues to promote entrepreneurship in the community.
Taranga strives to make a positive impact on primary level education initiatives. Situated in a remote area, deep in the forest, the Halili Primary School is out of sight and at a distance from governmental support structures. Apart from supporting the school with infra-structure maintenance, Taranga Safari stimulates a learning culture by sponsoring a learning platform where exemplary performance is recognized at the Annual Awards and Recognition events.
