Keeping in line with the traditional Wolwedans style, the ambience is that of plain elegance embraced by a natural, comfortable charm at The Dunes Lodge and Mountain view suite. Perched on top of a dune plateau, overlooking panoramic vistas in all directions and capturing the beauty of the desert in a most memorable way. The building style is a combination of wooden structures and canvas blinds, opening to the desert beyond. The lodge reflects the ambience of a tented camp but provides the comfort and protection of a permanent building. With 200 square meters of deck rising above the dunes, the Mountain View Suite provides ample living space and adds a touch of luxury to the Wolwedans Collection.More Info Video
Starting from sheep breeding, which despite destructive interventions in nature only yielded insufficient profits on the edge of the Namib Desert, the Windhoek entrepreneur Albi Brückner developed the vision at the beginning of the 1990s to renature the ecologically out of balance farmland into a private nature reserve and to economically secure its operation through ecologically exemplary tourism. The idea of the NamibRand Nature Reserve was born and has since been successfully implemented by initially 7 farmers on more than 2,000 square kilometres today. In the second generation of the Brückner family, Stephan Brückner drives the vision forward and thus NamibRand has developed into a globally recognised lighthouse project of successful nature conservation through sustainable tourism. Today, the Wolwedans Foundation plays a central role in the 4 c concept with its training activities. Commerce, conservation, community and culture.
Wolwedans is a founding member of the Global Ecosphere Retreats, an initiative spearheaded by the Zeitz Foundation. The Zeitz Foundation aims to transform all that we do into mechanisms that move this world forward in a sustainable manner. It is inspired by a vision of the Ecosphere – our planet and all of its life-sustaining regions – maintained in the healthiest possible state. Global Ecosphere Retreats are committed to promoting an inclusive, holistic paradigm of conservation that enhances livelihoods and fosters intercultural dialogue.
Wolwedans as the main user of the NamibRand Nature Reserve enables the continuous development process of the reserve to an ecological balance through its income. All human interventions are subject to the reservation of sustainability, which the NamibRand operators have laid down in a binding charter. People, planet and profit are equally important whilst assuring the conservation for future generations. Wolwedans is proud to be a founding member of the Ecosphere Retreats where conservation, enhancement of livelihoods and intercultural dialogue is fostered and are driven by the 4 c concept (Commerce, Conservation, Community and Culture)
Today the populations of springboks and oryx antelopes number thousands of animals again, zebras and wildebeests can migrate rain-periodically again, and giraffes, cheetahs and leopards have been successfully settled. Thanks to the financing shelters, nature has reclaimed the former farmland. NamibRand is one of the few spots in the world to have been certified as a Global Ecosphere Retreat (GER) and Africa's only International Dark Sky Reserve.
The Wolwedans Foundation has helped many young Namibians to uptake a career in tourism and Wolwedans Dunes Lodges sets a leading example in hospitality training.
The 9 chalets of the Wolwedans Dunes Lodge are lined up like a string of pearls along a mighty dune crest and frame in their centre the main complex of the whole ensemble. Fascinating is the view from all directions into the vastness of the red dunes of NamibRand.
After an extensive renovation, the chalets do not only have outside showers but also split level decks and offer more privacy. On the private verandah, one can also sleep under the canopy of stars. The natural path leads through deep sand from the chalets to the main ensemble of lounge, tea deck, library, wine cellar and restaurant.
Set on a 200 square metre deck, the Mountain View Suite promises 'paradise in the sand'. In an exclusive and well-maintained setting guest can enjoy the almost endless views of the desert. It seems hard to decide between a refreshing dip in the dip pool, siesta in the patio or relaxing in the hammock. A place where you immediately feel at home.
